Guido

Guido gets up before sunrise. He tip-toes out of the bedroom, in an effort to not wake up his wife — he knows better than to disturb her at the crack of dawn. He goes to the kitchen, where he immediately begins to make a dough. It’s one of his employees’ birthday, and as tradition demands, he’ll have cake and coffee ready as soon as they arrive at the shop. It’s something he learned from his father, who, in turn, learned from his father, way before he came to New York.

He remembers sitting at the dinner table and listening to them discussing the personal lives of their staff. Celebrating when someone had good news, worrying when they were in trouble, just like they were family. According to them, they were. So, that’s how Guido treats his own staff now.

“That smells delicious,” one of his sons says, entering the kitchen.

“I didn’t mean to wake you up,” Guido replies, apologetic.

“It’s fine,” Mario dismisses it, walking to the cabinet to get a mug. “I have that interview today.”

“Oh,” Guido sighs.

His sons are way more ambitious than he ever was. When Guido was a kid, all he ever dreamed of was inheriting the family coffee shop. Managing Green Bean is possibly what makes him the proudest. His sons, on the other hand, find the corner shop too small for their goals. Although they currently work with him, they want more than the shop can offer.

Carlo, the youngest one, wants to study in Paris to become a master confectioner. He dreams of working in a five-star restaurant kitchen, producing the most delicious desserts in the city. And Mario is going for an interview at a famous bakery chain, where he hopes to specialize in ‘cake design’. Guido doesn’t care about theory or design — what does it matter what it looks like or how it’s done? The important thing is to taste good. And in that department, he is a true specialist.

“Don’t worry, Carlo can manage on his own today,” Mario says in face of his father’s silence.

“I’m not worried,” Guido smiles, trying not to show his disappointment. He loves his sons’ drive. Yet, it makes him sad that he’s probably the last in the DeVicenzi line to run the coffee shop.

After finishing the cake and helping Carlo with the first batch of baked goods for the shop, Guido goes to work. They live in an apartment right above it and use their kitchen to supply it over the day. It’s a really small shop.

Guido places the cake and a coffee thermos on one of the tables, and walks around the empty place, surveying every corner. He rearranges a menu here, cleans a dark spot there, sweeps the floor, checks if the lamps are working, if the bathrooms are clean. That’s his morning routine. He likes doing this when nobody is around because he doesn’t want his employees to feel judge and think they’re not doing a good job. It’s not their fault that he wants everything to be more than perfect.
